The Cotton Spate console stands out from typical pop-up store displays by minimizing the number of products on display. This intentional reduction creates a sense of importance and emphasizes the purity of the brand's offerings. Unlike cluttered displays that overwhelm customers, this console invites them to focus on each product individually.
The wavy surface of the console is crafted from high-density foam, meticulously shaped by hand with reference to a three-dimensional computer model. The circular metal plates, painted in white, are inserted into the foam to create a striking contrast. The counter and outside enclosure of the console are expertly crafted with wood by skilled carpenters.
With dimensions of 375 cm in length, 90 cm in width, and 100 cm in height, the Cotton Spate console provides ample space for the display of products while maintaining a sleek and compact design.
Designed for the Olivia Yves London pop-up store in Taipei, the Cotton Spate console offers a seamless interaction between customers and store operators. Customers access the items from the front side, while the store operator stands behind the counter. Additionally, the console features storage space underneath the wavy surface, allowing the store to keep their stock readily accessible.
The design process for the Cotton Spate console began in July, with construction completed in September. The console was opened to the public in October 2019. Throughout the project, the designers focused on finding the most efficient ways to craft the three-dimensional surface, considering the choice of materials and crafting tools. By incorporating the skills of master craftsmen from various industries, the design achieved a minimal expense in assembling the shelf.
One of the main challenges faced during the project was the budget limitation for achieving the desired three-dimensional surface. While CNC digital fabrication is often the preferred method, it was not feasible for this pop-up shelf. The designers ingeniously solved this challenge by collaborating with master craftsmen who cut the high-density foam by hand, using the computer model as a reference.
The Cotton Spate console received recognition for its exceptional design, winning the Iron A' Design Award in the Furniture Design category in 2020. This prestigious award acknowledges well-designed, practical, and innovative creations that meet professional and industrial requirements. The Cotton Spate console's integration of industry best practices, competent technical characteristics, and its contribution to a better world made it a deserving recipient of this accolade.
